Customer Rating: Summary: It has saved me 4 tickets!!!!!! Comment: This product although pricey it has paid for it self and then some. I bought this product back in October, and it has performed as advertised. I love the TRUE-LOCKOUT of false signals feature, and when this thing goes off; you better pay attention to your surroundings. Best investment that I have made, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is tired of their radar going off every 2 minutes.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Detector Comment: I've owned the Escort 8500 and the 8500 X50 and this detector topples them both. The added GPS function which allows for detection of red light cameras, as well as blockage of false alarms, is fantastic and was my selling point. Yes, I have had false alarms go through this detector, but after about the 3rd or 4th time the detector stores the signal/location within its memory and blocks them out. Silence... something that even the well toted 8500 could not achieve. I only have two complaints on this detector.
1) The power socket is on the left side of the detector. If you are not using the hard wire kit, have a cigaratte lighter in the right-middle of your car, and have a navigation unit, this is quite annoying. The wire extends across the navigation screen. I do not understand why Escort changed the location of the power jack (the 8500 and X50 had them on their right side).
2) While driving on the freeway in the city where there are feeder lights, the "redlight camera" warning comes on, even if not on the feeder. I found the easiest fix is to just turn off the GPS while on the freeway. There is much less need to have it on in those driving conditions anyways.
So really my only compalint is #1, but that should be so far from a deal breaker in buying this detector. Yes it's expensive, but i've found that the escorts pay for themselves.
Customer Rating: Summary: Finally, a detector worth upgrading to. Comment: Over the years I have owned several radar detectors all the way back to the original Escort which was state of the art back in its day. Unfortunately, speed trap technology seemed to advance at a much faster rate than detector technology. In recent years, the 8500 spent most of the time in the trunk as things like speed cameras became the bigger threat and the hassle of listening to false alarms was more hassle than it was worth. The arrows on the Valentine are nice, but were not enough to bring me back to the fold. Reality is that the basic technology of detectors has not changed in 20 years ... until now.
The integration of GPS into a radar detector is probably the most significant innovation to this market, and is a game changer. A drive through places like AZ, where they have placed cash registers (er, speed cams) every 10 miles or so, instantly triples the value of a product like the 9500ix. On a recent trip to AZ it picked up every one of them (note that the fixed cameras do not rely on radar so a traditional detector is useless). It also noted the red light cameras, although in my opinion if you run red lights you deserve a ticket and a suspension.
Just as important as the alerts is the learning capability. In areas around Philadelphia, the noise pollution drives most other detectors crazy. The 9500ix has worked just as advertised, it spots the false alarms until about the 3rd pass when it recognizes them and marks them so that you are not getting beeped every time.
I was concerned when I saw a eviewer whining about having to pay for the data updates. Get serious, it is $30 for a 3 year subscription. if you can't afford that, then you should be buying a Whistler or some other $50 piece of junk.
Customer Rating: Summary: The best radar detector ever. Comment: I had a wonderful stroke of luck when my 9500i started acting up on me within the return period, and found this in the gold box.
In a word: "wow".
Like the 9500i, the range is nothing short of outstanding. I'm "seeing" police cars nearly a mile away on the highway, and in more than enough time to slow down in the city. The actual alert is enough to get your attention, and with AutoMute, it quiets down fast enough that you're not being constantly nagged.
While I really liked the 9500i, I absolutely love the 9500ix. Having a detector that *accurately* detects and locks out false alerts automatically is absolute bliss. Not only is it great to drive without hearing the detector going off every time you go near a grocery store, but I've also found that I pay much more attention to the alerts, now that I know the alert is real.
Sadly, though, Escort has left their Mac users completely in the dark, if you plan on pushing updates to the detector. Even if you're running Parallels or VMware Fusion (the VM's won't see it connected as a USB device). So, plan on doing Boot Camp or borrowing a Windows machine from a friend if you're looking for updates. The software itself is very good, and gives you lots of point-and-click options that you'd otherwise set through the on-screen menus built in to the detector.
You'll also find that while Escort gives you a very nice (though ridiculously huge) carrying case, they do not include a USB cable or way to power the detector outside of your car if you're doing updates. The USB port on the detector is a generic mini-USB port, so you don't need to buy a special cable if you already have something like a Treo, BlackBerry, PS3, TomTom, Canon digital camera, or other device that uses mini-USB cables. But, you'll need to figure out a way to plug in the cigarette lighter adapter if you're not taking a laptop to your car for updates.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ultimate Experiance Comment: Escort Passport 9500ix Radar/Laser Detector (Black)
I have driven with a number of radar detectors in the last twenty years, some excellent and some of other description.
Driving with my newly acquired Passport 9500ix has been my ultimate detector experience. It is wonderful not to be notified with an X or a K band alert every time I am passing the local supermarket, bank or convenience mart (sort of like they have their own pop-up ads on other detectors). Silence truly can be golden.
Now, when I'm local and get a K band alert, I know it's the real deal. Like the other day, when the county sheriff was set up by the convenience mart. He must have thought he was being pretty tricky, but my 9500ix knew the difference between his signal and the door openers (which are also on K band and have been "stored" by my detector).
Police radar detecting performance is better than any I have ever experienced. In New York Ka band is the flavor of choice and there is plenty being used both locally and on the interstates. It comes in many different forms and from either direction. My Passport has been way ahead of their game every time.
Considering the cost of today's tickets whenever and wherever you get them, I simply can't afford not to be using a detector and the 9500ix is the best I've ever used in all respects.
And, I do love that blue display.
